I think the 42 inch range has the best price-performance ratio currently. In that range, two really stand out and can be had for under $1000. Both have near-universal good reviews and lots of them.

The Panasonic TH-65PZ750U-- I think the Panasonics are the best across the board, but this is a full-HD 1920x1080 65" model and it's significantly cheaper that some slightly smaller models. Many Plasmas just have 1024x768 and stretch to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio. It's about $6000.
